Think the anime helps attracting a wider fanbase. While most of the few early western artworks reeked of tumblr I now encountered a chunk of western artists with artworks just as good as the Asian ones.

Lots of things are only hinted or hidden in a short single flashback scene. I had to rewatch a bunch of scenes in episode 3(?) or so and episode 4. Not because it's badly made IMO, it's just very condensed and fast paced, albeit in a good way IMO.

Same people are fans of old shit that is just as ambiguous or one-sided. Back in the day we still had fun with Berserk, Code Geass and Gundam for fujo even though some characters like Guts even have a canon love interest. Now they demand canon LGBTlike representation with a boring mutual and functioning canon gay relationship and if it's not involving the MC they won't touch it either because it's "crumbs".
And when I then shill series like Bravern which is all of this they backpedal and refuse it regardless because everything new is bad by default or something.
Anyway, I am enjoying Sparks quite much. And False Memories. Even enjoying World is Dancing though it has no fanart sadly. Kinda ship some of its characters too.

Homosports series like Blue lock can feed me long term cause of all the different guys that are baited together and how various artists in fandom will have different takes on how A and B would get together and how their relationship would actually play out. Something like Tasogare out of focus is perfectly fine and I'd recommend it for people to watch but I'm not invested in any of the couples in the long run.

The people I mean always act as if fujo pandering without 100% on-screen confirmation of mutual sexual attraction equaled bait that ends with het because some stupid shounen series they watched did that (allegedly). But there is a difference between MyHerowhatever and series like Tiger and Bunny, Blue Lock, X or Golden Kamuy that pander fujos without canon marriage or something.
I think it's enough if there substantial fuel and no canon denial or if only one character is obviously gay and obsessed with the other and the other stays with him and allows it but without openly reciprocating it in an equally romantic way. Pairings like the latter might as well be canon and are probably even meant to be ambiguous so that mutual or one-sided love are equally realistic.

Even if Shinji got together with Kaworu the apocalyptic threats wouldn't end. Only the dynamic with the MC would change, so it would still be engaging I think. This would be great too mind you. But I still consider series like SK8 or the dynamics I mentioned gay enough to consider the series themselves actually gay.

Gurren Lagann for example manages to write the het couples in organically while the main plot progresses or even intertwines with their relationship. This is nice and this is what I want for gay, but it's incredibly rare. But before I resort to bland slice of life stories with generic couples I rather engage in such non-BL story with hinted gay or fujo pandering.
TBH most of my OTP started with creators adding gayness for them as joke, or for creepiness' sake or to have a menhera character and they evolved from there. Probably because the characters and designs are more creative when they're supposed to be crazy gays at first. No 6 is usually mentioned when you talk about plot with gay, but even though it should be exactly what I want it didn't work for me, the white MC was too fucking ugly and boring for me (and the story not nearly as heavy and political as I wanted it to be, but that's another thing) because he was written to be liked and when they are they settle for the lowest common denominators.
