Bill is my all time favorite! Picking one from each other region though I'd choose: Bugsy, Maxie, Looker, Colress, Clemont, Nanu, and Avery. Haven't played SV yet, but my Pokeani choice would be James.

Favorite game is FRLG rare good remake and I like the expanded content added like the Sevii Islands. I think Kanto might honestly be my favorite region as well from a purely layout/gameplay perspective, but ignoring that Hoenn the best aesthetically with the tropical beach vibes.

Red or Hilbert, both are cute and work equally well when interpreted young or old.

And recently I've been rewatching the anime and my interest is peaked on James/Brock since they have a lot of similarities and seem to get along on the sideline while everyone else is bickering.

I'd be curious in checking out mystery dugeon human/pokemon where MC has a crisis over falling in love with partner who is non-human. Definitely not complaining about AZ's glow-up. I also agree that the MC is a bit boring, I think he's cute but let down by his bland outfit, I thought PLA MCs were much more distinctive and interesting. Hopefully there will be some good clothing options, and I'm definitely taking that fedora off asap.
I like the rivals more than the MCs, but everyone does look like a total zoomer.

Ash/Gary definitely counts to some extent, I'd say. At least in Pokemon Yellow.

I saw a video of some scrote ranting about how the Teraleak 'fixed' Cyrus, and he acted like the thing with his parents was completely new information. I think it was a reasonable inference even before the leak. I think that he misunderstands the appeal of Cyrus's character (and Team Galactic as whole), as part of their appeal is how crazy their plan is. I just find them so charming, much in the same way a lot of people find Archie and Maxie charming. There's something so fun about a bad guy gang with such lofty aspirations that are also completely batshit crazy in terms of what they're hoping to accomplish.
Anyways, I liked the elaboration on his parents quite a bit. I remember there was an NPC in Sunyshore City who alludes to him having a rough-ish childhood, which may have contributed to why he ended up like that, but it is nice to know there was even more thought put into his backstory. It was also cool to see the plans for his childhood, although I actually think a lot about Cyrus could be inferred from the (admittedly sparse) information we're given in-game. It was pretty similar to how I'd interpreted/imagined the character, and I would've loved to see more of all that hard work they put into planning in the game proper. I don't know quite how to feel about the initial draft/plan for his ending with the locket. I like what Platinum ended up doing with his ending, as it felt kind of fitting (Diamond and Pearl less so), but the older draft sounded really cool conceptually and I don't think I would've hated it.
It was also funny to see that Saturn was intended/planned to be 25 years old because there were a lot of people in the fandom who would get angry at people who would ship him with Cyrus because they thought Saturn was underage or "child-coded" or whatever. I remember some people arguing he was probably 15-ish kek.Sorry for the long, rambling post! It's nice to see the amount of thought they put into the characters even though, like you said, very little of it ends up in the final product.

N and the MC are set up as sort of destined rivals with parallels to the twin heroes and the scale is much bigger, all flaws with BW's writing aside. Then at the end, N leaves and the MC chases after him, and it's left open ended. The ending is what stuck with baby fujo me and I would always imagine their reunion.
All rivals since N have stayed on the more classic/mundane side and only Kieran has really come close to the same level as N recently. Volo kind of filled that niche too but most of his content is het sadly.

Arven and Nemona were very likable imo and have been well received by most people. Kieran feels like they brought back the old formula but make him go batshit this time like they want to subvert the trope except it ends with him acting mindbroken back into friendship by your OP-ness anyway, so I don't know what happened there. He seemed like a big mess of wasted potential with the way everyone was speculating the evil peach legendary was mind-controlling him only for it to turn out to be a big red herring. I wonder if there were some last-minute rewrites from GF. It's super weird. But N himself has plenty of mysteries like the rubiks cube that was supposed to be plot-important and his planned psychic abilities.

But at least they're not hideous uniforms like in SV, maybe it will be possible to customize their clothes later on. As for the starters I don't really have an opinion. They're not ugly, they're cute in a generic way, but I need to know how they will evolve. I'm sick of recent evolutions looking like random guys wearing furry costumes and looking like Disney parks cast members instead of cool monsters. The fire dog seems very popular so far. It reminds me of Missile in Ghost Trick.
The truth is that I'm not planning on playing the new game. I'm not going to buy a Switch 2 because I want to save money for other things, I'm not even done playing all my Switch games and games on other consoles, and I found gen 8 and 9 a lot less fun than previous games so instead of think "oh shit a new Pokemon game, I can't wait to play it!" I'm just think "oh there's a new game announced, ok" and that's it. I'm still curious enough to look forward to the next trailers though.

I didn't play BTOW yet so I have no opinion on the matter but I liked Xenoblade 1 enough and loved Xenoblade 2. Exploring all the areas was very satisfying even when it was difficult. SWSH kind of made it work because the game was on a regular map with smaller routes and big cities, with an open world area in the middle and I liked the open worlds in the DLC a lot. In SV it felt like it was too much. You have access to everything all at once but it feels more like a chore than anything else with how gym leaders and team star bosses's levels don't change depending on when you fight them, which made me look up everything online while playing. Which sucks. If the new game is more of the same stuff I don't want to play it.
