For the latter option, I can see Hirose having feelings for the teacher, but the teacher never reciprocating back. Whether the teacher knows about this crush is unknown. No.6358

>>6378I question whether they would do this to waifufag shows. Admittedly since I don't watch those I wouldn't know if they've been removing ecchi scenes or something like that.

I think that Hirose's awkward teacher crush adds some seasoning to what otherwise would be a pretty bland white bread schoolboy crush story like Sasaki to Miyano is.

No.6639
So I watched Given a while ago and already posted about it back then on the other website. But I got the songs stuck in my head again and started thinking about the lyrics and Mafuyu's thoughts about the whole Yuki situation.
Basically, Yuki and Mafuyu had an argument over Yuki spending too much time with the band and Mafuyu feeling left out, and that somehow spiraled to Mafuyu saying if you love me so much why don't you kill yourself for me or something like that. And Yuki took it upon himself to actually do it and went and had lots of alcohol and I think some pills too and fucking died. And I guess Mafuyu was blaming himself for it and feeling guilty about it, but at the same time, it was such an asshole move on Yuki's end. Like holy BPDickhead move. He did it to get back at Mafuyu somehow and the dumbass actually died just to win an argument. Like wow what a retard. Mafuyu dodged a bullet. And this leads back to the song lyrics, that goes something along the lines of "I don't feel lonely". Basically he doesn't miss Yuki or really care that much about his death, because maybe he did realize Yuki did it out of pettiness, so it's hard to mourn the death of someone this toxic. Mafuyu also managed to find a better boyfriend who would never do this weird mental gymnastics shit with him and he's happy. At the end it was Yuki who lost. Deserved lol. I forgot the name of the other guy from SYH who liked Yuki, the blond one, he was an alright character and grew on me in the movies centering around him and the Haikyuu looking ass guy, but his crush on Yuki was so contrived. A normal person being an outsider onlooker would see how insane Yuki is, so not sure why he saw in Yuki but it's for the drama I guess. I hate Yuki, all my homies hate Yuki. For a supposedly wholesome BL, this is such a strange twisted plot point lol.
I didn't like blond guy with piercings and the faggot with long hair and their romance, they were so annoying, and the 3rd wheel violin player was also annoying. They were the worst part of the story.
No.6641
>>6639>Mafuyu also managed to find a better boyfriend who would never do this weird mental gymnastics shit with him and he's happy.I read Given not too long ago, and honestly the side plot with Yuki committing suicide just made me go "wait, that's it?" because the manga is 9 volumes long and I expected it to focus on Mafuyu and Ritsuka the whole time instead of focusing on several couples in several arcs. Mafuyu got over it way faster than I expected, but good for him because I didn't really get why Yuki killed himself. Like what was the point. When you put it like this I feel even more like this was all an excuse to add angst to the story, so Mafuyu and Ritsuka's love story felt like it had a happy ending and not a bittersweet ending.
>At the end it was Yuki who lost. Deserved lol.kek that's harsh but he felt like a plot device to me more than a character. Maybe because I read the manga in just a few days, since it has been over for a while now. Maybe I didn't have enough time to really absorb everything little by little like fans who waited for new chapters every month.
>I didn't like blond guy with piercings and the faggot with long hair and their romanceI didn't dislike Akihiko all that much, but Haruki was annoying. How are you a grown man and crying every five seconds while refusing to talk? Just talk! Both Mafuyu and Ritsuka seemed more mature than these guys in comparison. And I avoided the entire manga as soon as it started being published in my country because Haruki looked too much like France from Hetalia and I simply couldn't unsee it. I went to a local anime convention with friends where the publishing company released the first volume for the first time and was heavily advertising Given, and both me and one of my friends just looked the big poster with all four main characters, looked at each other and went "LMAO is that France?!" and left.
No.6648
>>6641You're right, the whole Yuki thing was really just a plot device and wasn't given much thought. It failed to be impactful tbh. And the reason the stroy was so long is because they decided to focus on multiple couples, just to pad the timing and fake world building and character writing lol. It's the The Anonymous Noise of yaoi/BL. Shitty melodramatic romance centered around music with love triangles. At least Nino had good vocals and the songs were actually unique and creative lmao. Given has mid music. But both anime/manga have a special place in my heart because they were quintessential parts of my teenage years and my music journey. I still listen to the music of both so that's something.
No.6652
>>6639>but his crush on Yuki was so contrivedIdk if the anime covered it but
* at least in the manga he doesn't actually have a crush on Yuki. What he envied was how close Yuki&Mafuyu were and wanted a relationship like theirs. He did look up to Yuki ofc but not romantically. He realizes at some point that the relationship Yuki&Mafuyu is attainable he was just looking at it through rose-colored glasses.* It's nice to meet someone else who doesn't like him it also annoys me how Ritsuka gets pushed to the side bc of him to the point where I felt like he was a cuck at some points. Apparently there's going to be a Given sequel and I hope he's given more focus there. But it's very funny you hated that side story, I found all three of them interesting individually but together they created such a hot mess I can't even be happy that the ship I was slightly less put off by won kek.
No.6653
>>6652>spoilersYes they actually did address this, and that he was in love with the guy who was following him around. But to that guy, as an outsider, he saw it as blondie liking Yuki and nothing else and I kinda get why. It does come off as a crush with all the idolizing. Not to flex but I'm a hobbyist singer and really into music so I totally get that feeling about admiring someone for their talent so much you end up accidentally falling in love with them and having a huge crush on them regardless of any flaws they may have, including being ugly, just because they're so talented like that and it's extremely hot. Blondie bowl cut seemed to have that basically. But maybe that wasn't the intention of the author.
And yes, Ritsuka is so underrated and I kinda dislike how upon hearing Yuki's unfinished song/demo he was like "now I get what Mafuyu saw in him", like he got an inferiority complex over it and is trying to continue Yuki's legacy, assuming that's what's gonna make Mafuyu happy, instead of just a new start to move on from the past.
No.6661
>>6653>>6652I dropped the Given manga and I only ever watched the anime but is it ever elaborated why the MC's boyfriend killed himself after they had an argument? Or was he just depressed
No.6665
>>6661Kizu never really explicitly expanded on Yuki but the common reading is that he was already depressed/suicidal. In a short story his mom alludes to Yuki having the same problems as his dad, whatever that may be. Imo his suicide was a mix of mental illness, teenage irrationality, and his infatuation for Mafuyu. He was emotionally dependent on him and haunted by the idea that Mafuyu would forget him. Ergo he probably believed that killing himself would be the ultimate proof of his love given Mafuyu's heat of the moment comment asking Yuki if he'd die for him.
