Are there any good danmei that aren't in the xianxia genre? I've read MXTX's works and like the style but the cultivation fantasy stuff is kind of confusing and boring to me.

Well, it was good while it lasted. Having so many official translations was nice, but it looks like we might be back to MTL.
Hopefully if they really go through with this, they won't keep snapping up all the good IP for it so some other publishing house can still give us something decent.

I've been seeing danmei fandom losing it over this but since it's a Japanese company and their documents seem to be talking about localizing manga, isn't it more likely they're planning to use AI on manga the parent company already owns? 7S insists they won't use it for translation, but we know Japanese publishers have been experimenting with AI typesetting (which has in 100% of cases needed replacing with human edits) and AI sound effect replacements. The "six month process" they mentioned in their outlines is largely proofing and typeset, and should already be faster with Japanese staff on call to check things.

Media Do's big concern is that somehow the US isn't shifting manga on digital platforms fast enough for their liking. They might actually be incensed by danmei selling better and let danmei take its sweet time with the human process.

Last I heard, their AI LLM was only mean to be used on regular japanese books and not manga, and also not danmei since the LLM is only for japanese.

I started learning the second I finished my first danmei. I've already been through this rodeo with japanese. I fucking hate dealing with localization companies and fan translators. I can't fucking wait to git gud so I can ignore all of them like I do for manga.

I finally started reading Heaven's Official Blessing after letting my physical first volume rot on a shelf for nearly a year. So far it's just the introduction, I can't keep up with the characters' names yet but I should get used to them eventually. The setting reminded me of a less serious version of the 12 Kingdoms because they're based on the same mythologies/legends, so I'm already enjoying it so far.

Does anyone have any recs that actually care about the gong & his development? Even with ones that have a gong MC it still does seem to revolve around the shou in a way that doesn't happen vice versa. Bonus points if the shou pines first/falls harder or whatever TikTok fujos say while the gong has the plot on his mind.

maybe Demon Venerable Also Wants to Know and other cyan wings novels.
i find the romance in her novels to be sidelined by whatever the gong MC is going through. character development might be a bit sparse though.

there's a title that might fit what you’re looking for (竹涧饮茶客 - 穿书后被反派师尊表白了). the gong MC transmigrates into a novel and seduces the antagonist shizun. initially, there are no feelings involved, and MC just keeps the shizun around for physical convenience and uses him as a cultivation stat stick. at some point, shizun realises MC is just using him, but he's too dickmatised to kill MC. MC eventually gets his act together, and there's a decent character arc there. cw the shizun is intersex (shuangxing)
this one stood out for me because scummy PUA gongs are rare on the usual platforms for content moderation reasons.

Bingqiufags are extremely dedicated despite basically being the neglected and mistreated sibling of the MXTX fandom so I'll give them that. Probably it having the most completed adaptations (LA / dramaCD / donghua), so people can get into it from any angle. I want to say the LA also got on Netflix in 2019, so one of the first danmei LAs to reach a pretty accessible audience in the West & COVID hit shortly after so even people who can't pirate could watch it. It's just baby's first (and only) danmei for a lot of people + modern-day moralfagging (many people *liked* the censorship of the TV show compared to the novel kek it was a whole thing). Imagine JJR's reception if it came out nowadays kek.

I'm quite surprised by how much Saye is making, even despite how its CN live action drama and donghua adaptations were both shelved.

The new donghua and live action licenses didn't specify the country so it's assumed they are CN adaptations, which may hopefully mean the loosening of censorship guidelines for danmei adaptations. This may or may not mean Haoyixing (2ha's drama) may have a chance of airing one day lol.

Danmei making big money is good, but it's also interesting to note that most of these successful works are from authors who have established themselves pre-covid. That is to say that recent danmei works and authors ~~are mid~~ have not taken off. There are a few outliers (e.g. MISVIL) who managed to make licensing money because they managed to cement an international audience through fan TLs.

I don't know. I haven't finished reading the fantranslation of the novel that's been sitting on my hard drive for a while.

>The Untamed kicked off so much of the Western hype/fanaticism over danmei

Not surprising, since The Untamed was 'babby's first danmei LA' for many and the novel it's based on is super-popular. In comparison, TYK (or books by Priest in general) is niche and doesn't have a donghua to rope more people in and check other adaptations.

The funny moments in Word of Honour are actually funny and it doesn't drag. And I love flirtatious LIs.

But it is notably the first time these estimates have been shared at all. My take is that JJWXC is using these figures as a PR stunt to show that investing in/publishing on their platform is profitable, especially when they have other strong competitors.

Side note: the theme for this year's conference was on the usage of AI in creative writing. Ironically I learnt about this through an AI generated article from Sina (https://k.sina.cn/article_7879923021_1d5ae154d06801jvf4.html if anyone is interested)

>'best bros over hoes' adaptation

My bad, I worded the censorship guidelines part poorly. I agree with you and don't think CN adaptations will ever go beyond depicting bros, and meant to refer to the lifting of the ban hammer on CN donghua and live-action adaptations. There were multiple big budget projects which were filmed or greenlit but were shelved indefinitely because of the ban hammer on danmei adaptations (e.g. 2ha, Saye, Modu, TGCF live action). But the fact that JJWXC is now comfortably flaunting danmei's profitability (and new licensed adaptations) after keeping things lowkey for a while is hopefully a sign that we may see CN adaptations again.

They openly flaunt their contract details? Perhaps publishers do things differently in China. I can imagine how doing that would make licensing companies mad and burn some bridges ('why have we overpaid for title X if the going rate is much lower?').

>There were multiple big budget projects which were filmed or greenlit but were shelved indefinitely because of the ban hammer on danmei adaptations (e.g. 2ha, Saye, Modu, TGCF live action).
